On October 21, 1956, Madge Youtz Elementary School was dedicated. Its construction was necessary to meet the rapidly increasing population of the northeast section of Canton. Mr. Dennis Casner was principal at the time of the dedication.
Miss Madge Youtz, a teacher and principal in the Canton Public Schools for fifty years, rendered to her pupils and the community a distinguished service which places her high on the list of truly great teachers whose lives have been dedicated to the interests of Canton and its children. Miss Youtz, by reason of her great love of children, sound wisdom, good judgment, tireless energy and unbounded enthusiasm, was a vitalizing force in the lives of hundreds of boys and girls who came under her direction. A great many of these boys and girls are now men and women who remember, with gratitude and affection, her contribution to their lives. Her influence extended far beyond the school room, inspiring all who knew her.
In 1957 the building housed two classes of each of the first three grades because of the limited number of classrooms. The building was constructed so that additional classrooms could be added in the future.
In the summer of 1959, seven classrooms, a kindergarten, and a multi-purpose room were added to the original building. Miss Ruth Jones was principal until September, 1959, followed by Miss Dorothy Katz.
Miss Katz continued to be the Youtz Principal until 1967. The list of principals from then until now is as follows: 1967-70 Cleyon Thomas; 70-73 Robert Ferguson; 73-76 Gerald Burlingame; 76-78 Dorothy Wright; 78-89 Richard Barnes; 89-99 Richard Marks; 1999-2000 Everett Daniels; and our current principal, Chet Lenartowicz.
In the fall of 1965 six new rooms and a gym were added. During the 1981-82 school year Room 111 was added to be used as a Math Prescriptive Lab. It had originally been part of the garage. In 1989 it was used for L.D. tutoring. Currently, it is used as our BAC (Building Assets and Character) Room. The lunchroom was added in November 1986.
